Taroudant is the eleventh century capital of a small kingdom. Annexed by the Almoravids in 1056, independent under the Almohads, it is destroyed in 1306 by the Merinids.
It reached its peak in the sixteenth century under the influence of ech-Sheikh Mohammed who made his capital and a base for its offensive against the Portuguese installed in Agadir. It then becomes an important caravan centre.
